Fight the Flu and Stay Healthy

During this year’s flu season, be aware that students interacting with each other increases the chance of spreading the illness. The most effective way to prevent seasonal flu and keep your family healthy is by getting the flu vaccine each year.

What is the Flu?

The flu is a contagious illness. A contagious illness spreads from one person to another through direct or indirect contact. Young children especially can be at risk for serious flu complications. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends vaccination for everyone 6 months of age and older. It is best to get the flu vaccine by the end of October as flu season typically peaks from December to February.

What are the benefits of getting the flu vaccine?

  • Getting a flu vaccine can reduce the risk of flu-related hospitalization. During 2016-2017, the flu vaccination prevented an estimated 85,000 flu-related hospitalizations according to the CDC.
  • Receiving the flu vaccine can protect others who are more at risk of serious flu illnesses. This list includes the elderly, infants and young children, and people with chronic health issues.
  • Getting a flu vaccine can lessen symptoms if you or your family falls ill to the flu.

Where can my family and I get vaccinated?

  • Participating Network Pharmacy

Busque una farmacia. In order to receive a vaccine at no cost, you must use an in network pharmacy and the pharmacist must give the flu vaccine. Otherwise, you may not be not be covered and have to pay the entire cost.

  • Military Hospital or Clinic

Find a military hospital or clinic. Note that active duty service members have priority.

  • Primary Care Provider or TRICARE-authorized provider

Find a doctor. The flu vaccine is $0, but you might have a copayment. Remember to call ahead to make sure the vaccine is available.

What steps can I take to prevent the flu?

  • Wash your hands before eating and after leaving a public location to avoid spreading germs.
  • Clean and disinfect counters and work areas.
  • Drink plenty of water, get adequate sleep, and exercise to boost your immune system.
  • Stay home if you start feeling sick.

Remember, the flu shot should be the first step in protecting yourself against the virus.
